Search Engine Positioning, Submission Tools and Services
Search Engine Optimization (Positioning) is the most intelligent and cost-effective investment you can make.  Search engine optimization, also referred to as placement and positioning,  is the process of improving a website to generate improved (higher) search engine rankings.
The higher your ranking, the more you're apt to attract qualified visitors to your e-store.

The objective
-Evaluate search engines to determine which are the most relevant.
-Increase and maximize your website listings.
-Broaden the amount of links on other strategically appropriate websites
-Improve your search result position rankings
-Allow search engines to more easily "crawl" your website

Google / www.google.com
Google has a well-deserved reputation as the top choice for those searching the web. The crawler-based service provides both comprehensive coverage of the web along with great relevancy. Google sells paid placement advertising links that appear on its own site and which are distributed to others.

Yahoo / www.yahoo.com
Launched in 1994, Yahoo is the web's oldest "directory,"  In 10/02, Yahoo made a giant shift to crawler-based listings for its main results, provided by Google until 02/04. Now, Yahoo uses its own search technology.  Like Google, Yahoo sells paid placement advertising links that appear on its own site and which are distributed to others. These are sold through Overture.  Yahoo purchased Overture in 10/03.

AllTheWeb.com / www.alltheweb.com
AllTheWeb  is powered by Yahoo and focuses on web searching, but includes news, picture, video, MP3 and FTP.  AtW is a lighter, more customizable and pleasant "pure search" experience than Yahoo.  AllTheWeb.com was previously owned by a company called FAST and used as a showcase for that company's web search technology. (Sometimes AllTheWeb.com is also referred-to as FAST or FAST Search.
AtW was purchased by Overturein o4/03 and is now a Yahoo property. It is no longer associated with FAST.

Ask Jeeves / www.askjeeves.com
Ask Jeeves was developed in 1998 as a "natural language" search engine allowing you to search by asking questions, to which it responded with answers. Ask Jeeves today uses crawler-based technology based on their Teoma search engine.

Lycos / www.lycos.com
Lycos is one of the oldest search engines on the web, online since 1994,  In 1999 it ceased crawling the web for its own listings and now provides access to human-powered results from LookSmart and popular queries and crawler-based results from Yahoo. Lycos is owned by Terra Lycos, a company formed with Lycos and Terra Networks merged in 10/00.  Terra Lycos also owns HotBot.

Open Directory / http://dmoz.org/
Volunteers catalog the web for the  Open Directory. Originally called NewHoo, it was launched in 06/96 and was purchased by AOL Time -Warner.
